Why a 4th?

A guitar's top four strings are D, G, B and E. A ukulele in standard tuning is G, C, E and A: each string is 5 semitones (a perfect 4th) higher. The finger shapes are the same; the notes are a 4th higher, so the chord names are too.

Tips for guitarists picking up a ukulele

Four strings, fewer notes

A ukulele chord has at most four notes, so big chords lose a note (usually the 5th). They still sound right in a song.

The high G string

Standard ukulele tuning is "re-entrant": the G string is higher than the C string. That gives the ukulele its bright sound, and it is why the lowest note of a ukulele chord is often not its root.

Some chords swap difficulty

F is a barre chord on guitar but easy on ukulele (2010). E is easy on guitar but awkward on ukulele. If a song is full of hard ukulele chords, try a different key.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert guitar chords to ukulele?

Keep the chord names and use ukulele shapes for them: a G chord is still G, you just finger it differently (0232 on ukulele). Paste the song above with "Same key" selected to see every chord as a ukulele diagram.

Can I play guitar chord shapes on a ukulele?

Yes. A ukulele (G C E A) is tuned like the top four strings of a guitar (D G B E) moved up a perfect 4th, so the guitar shape you know makes a chord 5 semitones higher: the G shape gives C, the D shape gives G, the E shape gives A. Choose "Same finger shapes" to see the new names.

Why does the same shape have a different name on ukulele?

Because the strings are tuned to different notes. Each ukulele string is a perfect 4th higher than the matching guitar string, so every shape sounds a 4th higher and gets that chord's name.

What about a baritone ukulele?

A baritone ukulele is tuned D G B E, the same as the top four strings of a guitar, so guitar shapes keep their names. Use guitar chord diagrams and leave out the two lowest strings.

How do I convert ukulele chords to guitar?

Choose Ukulele → Guitar. With "Same key" the chord names stay and you get guitar diagrams. With "Same finger shapes" you see what your ukulele shapes give on a guitar's top four strings: 5 semitones lower (the ukulele C shape is a G on guitar).

What are the easiest keys for ukulele?

Using our checked ukulele shapes, the easiest major keys (by the I, IV, V and vi chords) are C major, G major, D major, A major. For other keys, a capo or the chord transposer can move the song to one of these.
