How to read a ukulele chord diagram
Strings run up and down: G, C, E, A from left to right.
Frets run across. The thick line at the top is the nut; when a shape starts higher up, the starting fret is written next to it.
Dots show where to press; the number is the finger: 1 index, 2 middle, 3 ring, 4 little finger.
O above a string means play it open; X means don't play it.
Each diagram is the neck seen from the front. The four vertical lines are the strings G, C, E and A from left to right; the horizontal lines are frets. A dot shows where to press and its number is the finger: 1 index, 2 middle, 3 ring, 4 little finger. O means play the string open.
What are the easiest ukulele chords?
The chords in "Start with these chords" above use open strings and no barre: C, D, E♭, E, F, G, A, Cm, Dm, Em, Fm, F♯m, Gm, Am, C7, E7, G7 and A7.
How is a ukulele tuned?
Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles are usually tuned G–C–E–A, with the G string higher than the C string ("re-entrant" tuning: G4 C4 E4 A4). Some players use a low G (G3) instead. The chord shapes are the same either way.
Can I play guitar chord shapes on a ukulele?
Yes, but they make different chords. The ukulele's four strings are tuned like a guitar's top four strings, 5 semitones higher, so a guitar shape played on a ukulele sounds 5 semitones higher: a G shape sounds as C. The guitar to ukulele converter does this for whole songs.
Can I print this ukulele chord chart?
Yes. Each chord type has a "Print this chart" button that prints just that chart. To print the whole page, use your browser's Print command; choose "Save as PDF" to keep a copy.
