Find the best key for your voice
To find the best key for your voice, compare the song's highest and lowest melody notes with your highest and lowest comfortable notes, then move the song by the number of semitones that fits it inside your range.
Quick method: try keys with the transposer
- Paste the song into the chord transposer.
- Sing the highest line of the song (usually the chorus) in the original key.
- If it strains, press − (one semitone down) and sing it again. If it feels low and dull, press +.
- Stop at the first key where the highest line is easy and the lowest line is still clear.
Exact method: compare the ranges
Every song melody has a lowest and a highest note, and so does your comfortable singing range. Transposing moves every note of the melody by the same number of semitones, so the song fits when its lowest note lands at or above your lowest comfortable note and its highest note lands at or below your highest.
1. Find your comfortable range
Sing along with a piano or a tuner app. Go down until your voice loses its tone: the last clear note is your lowest comfortable note. Go up until you would have to strain or push: the last easy note is your highest comfortable note. Note names like G3 or C5 tell the octave as well as the note (C4 is middle C).
2. Find the song's range
Look at the sheet music, or find the lowest and highest sung notes by ear with a piano. You only need these two notes.
3. Count the semitones
Count from the song's highest note to your highest comfortable note: that is the most you can move it up (or, if the song's note is higher, how far you must move it down). Check the lowest note the same way. Any shift that satisfies both works.
Range calculator
Enter both ranges and the song's key to see the shifts and keys that fit:
Best: down 4 semitones → E♭ major
Only this shift keeps the whole melody in your range.
Worked example
Your comfortable range is G3 to C5. The song's melody goes from B3 up to E5, and it is in G major. E5 is 4 semitones above your C5, so the song must go down at least 4 semitones. Down 4, the lowest note B3 becomes G3: exactly your lowest comfortable note. Down 4 semitones from G major is E♭ major, and that is the key to try.
Tips
Pick by the part that matters most
If the whole melody can't fit, choose the key for the chorus or the emotional high point, and let a few low verse notes be soft.
Guitarists: transpose down, then capo
A lower key can mean hard chords. After transposing, open the Capo panel in the transposer, or the capo calculator, to play the new key with easy shapes.
Singing with a backing track?
Open the track in the MP3 transposer and move it by the same number of semitones: the recording changes key without changing its speed.
Write the key on your chord sheet
Once you have found your key, save it: print the transposed sheet, download it, or press "Save on this device" in the transposer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I lower the key of a song?
Move every chord down by the same number of semitones. In the chord transposer, paste the song and press − once per semitone (or pick the new key on the wheel). Sing the highest line after each step and stop when it feels easy.
The song is too high for me. How far down should I go?
Find the song's highest melody note and your highest comfortable note, and count the semitones between them. That is how far down to move. Then check that the lowest note of the song isn't now below your range.
How do I find my vocal range?
Sing along with a piano, a keyboard app or a tuner app. Slide down until your voice gets weak or breathy: the last clear note is your lowest comfortable note. Do the same going up without straining. Use the comfortable notes, not the extreme ones.
Does a capo help with singing?
A capo raises the key, so it helps when a song is too low for you. For a song that is too high, transpose it down instead; you can then use a capo to get easy chord shapes in the new key.
Why does a new key sometimes feel worse in a different part of the song?
Songs have a range: moving the key moves every note by the same amount. If the verse is low and the chorus is high, a key that fixes one part can strain the other. Pick the key by the most important part (usually the chorus), or choose the middle of your range.
