Power Chords: Chart and How to Play Them

A power chord has just two notes, the root and the 5th, often with the root doubled an octave up. It is written with a 5 (E5, A5, C5) and, with no 3rd, it is neither major nor minor. Below: power chords on all 12 roots with both main shapes, how to play them, and how to turn power chords into full chords.

How to play a power chord

  1. Put your index finger (1) on the root: on the low E string for the first chart below, on the A string for the second.
  2. Put your ring finger (3) two frets higher on the next string (the 5th).
  3. For the three-note version, add your little finger (4) on the same fret as your ring finger, one string higher (the root an octave up). With the root on the D string, that note is one fret further up, because the B string is tuned differently.
  4. Play only those strings; keep the others quiet with your other fingers.

The shape stays the same on every fret: one fret higher plays the power chord one semitone higher.

Where to play each power chord

Frequently asked questions

What notes are in a power chord?

Two different notes: the root and the perfect 5th, 7 semitones above it. Guitarists often add the root again an octave higher. E5 is E and B; C5 is C and G.

Are there minor power chords?

No. Major and minor chords differ only in their 3rd, and a power chord has no 3rd. That is why the same power chord fits both: E5 works where the song has E or Em.

How do you turn a power chord into a full chord?

Add the 3rd. For a major chord, add the note 4 semitones above the root; for a minor chord, the note 3 semitones above. E5 (E, B) plus G♯ is E major; plus G it is E minor. The table on this page lists all twelve.

How do you play a power chord on guitar?

Put your index finger on the root on the low E or A string, and your ring finger two frets higher on the next string. For the fuller three-note version, add your little finger on the same fret as your ring finger, one string higher. Play only those strings.

Can you play power chords on piano?

Yes: play the root and the 5th (7 semitones up) together, and add the root an octave higher if you like. C5 on piano is C and G.

What does the 5 in E5 mean?

It names the chord by its two notes: the root (E) and the 5th (B). The symbol is written with a 5: E5, A5, C5.
